Story and essence of Cassina Nuage bookcase

The origins of Nuage go back to the Far East in the 1940s, and more precisely to the Imperial Palace in Kyoto where Perriand got the idea for her modular bookcase, observing a series of shelves arranged to form the outline of a cloud.

This unconventional display ignited her vision for modularity and creative flexibility, laying the groundwork for what would become the Nuage, a bookcase that celebrates freedom in form and function.

The perfection behind the Nuage design originates from its asymmetric design, offering a wide range of customizable configurations suited to various needs and functions.

Its intersecting lines, minimalist shapes, vibrant color contrasts as well as the balance of open and closed spaces allow for refined solutions of chromatic and spatial composition, as if it were a neo-plasticist painting rendered three-dimensionally, and in which singularity and multiplicity are continually intertwined without mixing.

The rationalist mind of Charlotte Perriand

Charlotte Perriand was a central figure in the avant-garde movement that reshaped aesthetic values and modern living in the early twentieth century.
Renowned for her contributions to interior design, she envisioned spaces that embodied a new lifestyle approach, emphasizing both functionality and beauty.

Her career was launched with acclaim thanks to r her Bar under the Roof at the 1927 Salon d’Automne, crafted from nickel-plated copper and anodized aluminum.
That same year, she began a significant collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret.

Perriand’s explorations of materials—especially bamboo during her time in Japan—brought unique textures and forms to her creations.

Later, her works gained international recognition through commissions from Air France and other institutions, solidifying her legacy as a designer committed to innovative rationalism, now celebrated in iMaestri collection.
